Revolutionizing Eye Diagnostics with the OCULUS ImageCam® 3

The slit lamp examination is a cornerstone of ophthalmology, allowing doctors to closely examine the anterior, middle, and posterior segments of the eye. This method helps detect even the smallest abnormalities, injuries, or early signs of diseases like corneal damage, infections, retinal detachment, and macular degeneration. However, capturing clear images of the eye is a challenge due to its constant movement, often resulting in motion blur and shaky images.

To improve diagnostics, streamline workflow, and reduce examination time, high-quality, fast, and user-friendly slit lamp documentation systems are essential. These systems need to produce sharp, reliable images while being ergonomic and easy to use.

Cutting-Edge Technology from OCULUS

OCULUS Optikgeräte GmbH, a German company specializing in eye diagnostics, has developed one of the world’s smallest and lightest slit lamp imaging systems. At its core is a high-resolution USB3 Vision industrial camera from IDS, tailored for medical and microscopy applications.

Efficient & Intuitive Imaging

Michael Moos

The OCULUS ImageCam® 3 sets a new standard in digital slit lamp photography. Designed for ease of use, it provides a wide field of view for highly accurate diagnoses. The system incorporates a low-light, high-performance IDS camera from the USB3 uEye+ CP family, ensuring exceptional image quality even in challenging conditions.
“Only a fast camera can deliver low-noise images under such difficult conditions,” explains Michael Moos, Product Manager at OCULUS. Speed is also crucial—this advanced camera captures up to 60 frames per second, allowing for precise imaging between eye movements. The innovative frame-out-of-video function records the entire examination process, letting doctors select the best frames without compromising image quality.

Powerful Camera for Medical Excellence

The IDS camera integrated into the OCULUS ImageCam® 3 is specifically designed for medical applications. It features:
✅ Advanced pixel pre-processing for enhanced image clarity
✅ 120 MB internal memory to handle high-speed image sequences
✅ 420 MB/s data transfer rate with minimal CPU load
✅ Sony Pregius IMX265 CMOS sensor, a top-tier 3 MP image sensor

“To achieve a higher frame rate, we scale down the image using AOI (Area of Interest) technology,” explains Phillip Schissler, Sales Manager Medical & Microscopy at IDS. The camera’s compact design—measuring just 29 x 29 x 29 mm and weighing around 50 grams—ensures it fits seamlessly into space-sensitive medical setups.

Optimized Slit Lamp Diagnostics

To ensure superior diagnostic imaging, the system includes a high-quality beam splitter. This component:
🔹 Simultaneously illuminates and magnifies the eye for thorough examination
🔹 Features a mechanical iris diaphragm, significantly improving depth of field
🔹 Easily adapts to all standard slit lamps

“The camera and beam splitter are so compact and lightweight that they integrate seamlessly into daily practice,” says the manufacturer. This enhances workflow efficiency and makes eye diagnostics easier than ever.

Transforming Eye Care with Advanced Imaging

The OCULUS ImageCam® 3 enables objective documentation of eye conditions, helping doctors monitor disease progression and compare treatments. Patients also benefit—seeing clear visual references of their diagnosis helps them better understand their condition and treatment plan.

The Future: AI & Smarter Diagnostics

Innovations like the OCULUS ImageCam® 3, powered by cutting-edge industrial cameras, are shaping the future of ophthalmology. Artificial intelligence (AI) is now being integrated into slit lamp imaging, enhancing disease detection, diagnostic accuracy, and treatment planning. With AI-assisted analysis, doctors can work more efficiently while improving patient care and outcomes.

The future of eye diagnostics is here—and it’s clearer than ever.
